Mini Break

It was a long weekend here (Labour Day today) and at short notice we were invited out to a friend's sister's bach (cabin) on Kawau Island. That's pronounced Cow-ow btw.

We took a ferry over
Kawau Island
Leaving Mansion Bay, where there is a real mansion built by Sir George Grey, an eccentric governor of NZ back in the 1800s.

We stayed here
Kawau Island

Looked at this view (and out to the bay with the yachts) and ate cheese and crackers by the fire
Kawau Island

And did a short walk to some abandoned DOC houses
Kawau Island

The weather wasn't the best but a good time was had by all, even if the Wekas were noisy as hell and insisted on coming onto the deck during the night and scaring me; and something growled at me from a bush as I walked past in the night. It made me walk a little faster even though I'm sure it was a possum. The good thing about the NZ bush is that the most dangerous thing you're likely to encounter is another human being, but it still gets dark and spooky!

  2. Did we go to that island last time we were there? I remember the name and the mansion the dock even looks familiar. I have this recollection of us walking around on an island somewhere maybe it was when I was down for your wedding I can't remember. Looks like a good trip considering it was spur of the moment.

  4. DOC = Dept. of Conservation. They have quite a large estate around NZ but not much money so they're letting these houses fall down. It's such a pity because they are in an absolutely prime position with a jetty and could be rented out at exhorbitant prices if fixed up.

Jess - we went out to Tiritirimatangi on our friend's boat - it's a bird sanctuary out in the Gulf just off Auckland, so somewhat closer. We went for a walk though, so you're remembering right!

Shelly - yes you would have loved it, I thought of you when I took that third photo actually. :)
