Air dry clay fail

I've had this idea for a clay house in my head for awhile and had a go at making one on Friday. Needless to say I'll be having another go at it today!

Air dry clay fail

I think perhaps it dried too quickly so I'll try and slow it down a bit and flip the pieces often. Has anyone out there had experience with this kind of thing?

It really sucks when you have this clear vision in your mind of what it could look like and then tawdry reality hits!

  1. Hi Jacqui - I took a clay class ages ago and when we made tiles the tutor suggested we score the back to help it from bowing. I think we just made a grid of grooves about 2cm apart and 2-3mm deep. I didn't keep most of the tiles, they were flat but kinda ugly.

  2. In ceramics class we always covered pieces with plastic with just a little space left for air flow so they would dry much slower and not get out of shape.

  3. That's a good idea, if I do any more of these I'll give it a go - although I'm a bit nervous about my ability to score enough to help and not too much as to weaken the pieces!

  4. I put a chopping board on top of them last night which kept them flat but slowed the drying down a bit too much, a slight space would be good, thanks for the tip!
